There is no arguing that history subject is the foundation of understanding what life truly is so that one can carry on in life; it precedes development and self-understanding. There is no justification – in any sense – for conceiving such an idea! Why would anyone commit such a crime? I think it is a crime to the living and unborn generations to come removing the History subject from Nigeria’s Educational curriculum and leaders who would have opposed, clapped their hands…oh, great idea! They all foolishly agreed to that decision. Even people who have never set foot in Nigeria would lose history subject by learning about Nigeria and its history through textbooks.

History subject is the best basis for understanding Nigeria because it is the only place where you can clearly see the characteristics of the country and its citizens.

When you ask yourself how the country got its name, it becomes obvious; it was started by the ancestors of everyone who is living in Nigeria today. This is what we believe and this is what we need to teach children in order to get a better understanding of the country.

When we think about what is Nigeria’s greatest accomplishment before today, the answer becomes obvious; it is not the most populated country, nor the largest landmass, but it is the peaceful coexistence among all ethnicities – NO RIVES!

History subject makes the country, people and government understandable; it provides a perspective for everyone in the country and its citizens. It is what we need to understand in order to improve Nigeria’s future. We are the ones who are supposed to be better than Nigeria. We should want that because Nigeria represents a better way of living. I once heard someone say, we don’t know what we have, I will pay anything to be a Nigerian; the world knows, she added.

The biggest challenge facing Nigeria is to break the vicious cycle of poverty and instability that is bound to continue forever. If we can do that, we will have achieved the greatest achievement of all times.

Let us think about what we do most often when deciding on subjects for history lesson; we ask ourselves “What can I learn from this?” or “What do I want to learn?” This is the wrong approach. It is the approach of the fool. Why do we do this? Because we feel ignorant and unqualified to teach history subject and because we don’t have the skills or knowledge to teach it. We must learn how to teach the subject properly in order to get better results and get our subjects taught as the country expects.
